An Omnipresent force in the Baltimore music scene, DJ Knowledge has been bringing his unique blend of turntablist roots and deep, soulful house to the area for over a decade.  As a member of the now-defunkt Sonic Soul Collective, knowledge played alongside some of the genre’s most prolific names, and his powerful charisma and charm is nearly impossible to ignore.  A dear friend to Gourmetbeats, we were delighted when he slipped us this mix.  Recorded live at Mosaic in Baltimore, it’s one of those mixes where you can almost hear him reading the crowd.

“The deeper I go, the more knowledge I know…”

Sky Lounge

The Sky Lounge in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Baltimore closed this year.  Over the past 5 years it hosted many of Baltimore’s greatest DJ’s at weekly events hosted by people such as DJ Karizma, Sonic Soul Productions, and the 2-Charming Crew.  It was also here that Joe Nice and Tai, residents at 2-Charming’s weekly Delivery party, decided to form Gourmetbeats.Com.

This is a live recording of Tai’s first performance at the Sky Lounge in 2003.

Tai’s alter ego, Tim Down was created as a side project to explore some of the styles not typically heard from this already diverse DJ.  Focused on melding the sounds of Baltimore Club, Electro, and Indie, Tim Down fuses these genres together to form one of the newest sounds of the underground. Dan Gee and John Ask of Downtempo Soundsystem came by in April of 2004 for their first of many appearances on GourmetBeats Radio. They are known in Baltimore as the masters of dub, with John Ask’s record collection being perhaps one of the most extensive on the east coast. This show has become legendary among regular gourmetbeats radio listeners, mostly because of the quality tunes that Dan and John brought, and partially due to Joe Nice’s singing debut which can be heard at the 29 minute mark.

A year after the premier of Gourmetbeats Radio, and things were starting to clean up a bit. (Obviously still having problems with some feedback…)

MC Twisty was a regular vocalist at Joe’s performances in ‘03 and ‘04, and this show highlights his talent nicely. He was great at the 140+ BPM flows, and when combined with Joe’s devastating bass, made for a formidable force.

Twisty joins in for the second half of the show.

Baltimore at night from the Belvedere Hotel.

We are approaching the 5 year anniversary of Gourmetbeats Radio! In celebration we’ve decided to launch a new monthly podcast, beginning today with the premier episode of Gourmetbeats Radio, originally broadcast on September 4th, 2003. Hosted by Joe Nice and featuring the downtempo stylings of Dj Tai, this first broadcast was a little rocky to say the least, but marked the beginning of something new and exciting.
