Sounds for the Musical Connoisseur

Music in Baltimore is full of life. From the booty shaking Club parties, to the hands-in-the-air Soulful House scene, it’s a place where people lay it all out on the table. I recently moved back to the Mid-Atlantic region, and Baltimore was the first place I visited. I was invited out to play on Thanksgiving by the guys over at Moog and although I had been away for over three years, immersed in other places and other sounds, that Baltimore life came flooding back. I set out to make a simple deep house set, and ended up with something full of soul. Perhaps it was memories of long nights dancing to Ultra Nate at Sugar, or DJ Spen at Paradox, but that Baltimore feeling crept over me and this was the result. Enjoy!

An Omnipresent force in the Baltimore music scene, DJ Knowledge has been bringing his unique blend of turntablist roots and deep, soulful house to the area for over a decade.  As a member of the now-defunkt Sonic Soul Collective, knowledge played alongside some of the genre’s most prolific names, and his powerful charisma and charm is nearly impossible to ignore.  A dear friend to Gourmetbeats, we were delighted when he slipped us this mix.  Recorded live at Mosaic in Baltimore, it’s one of those mixes where you can almost hear him reading the crowd.

“The deeper I go, the more knowledge I know…”

For all the house heads out there, some recommended tunes coming from Deeper Shades of House front man Lars Behrenroth.  A nice mix of the deep and the deeper, “The Way You Move” feat. Chezere brings it straight to the dance floor with haunting synths and soulful vocals, while “Dissever” journeys into the deep and sexy side of house that is showcased so often on Behrenroth’s stellar “Deeper Shades” podcast.  Our choice of the album, “Dare Degree”, is a percussive groover that refuses to let up. Finally “Are you sure” rounds out the EP with a downbeat excursion for the late night hours.

Gourmetbeats was introduced first hand to Behrenroth’s music in 2005 when he made an appearance in Baltimore at Patrick Turners “Movim Lounge” with an opening set by our own DJ Tai.  Since 1996 his productions have matured into a consistent flow of quality deep house, and we look forward to future releases from Deeper Shades Recordings.

The hosts of Afternoon Delight have posted links to the live sets from this years Winter Music Conference HERE.  Download them while they are still available!  Definitely one of the highlights of WMC 2009, it’s a great bonus that this day was recorded (for the most part) to be relived by those that couldn’t make it down this year.

Our man in the City of Angels, Adam Auburn has released a great new house mix celebrating his recent move to LA.  Ranging from the Deep and Sexy to the Party Rockin, Adam comes correct as always, and fresh with four of his own edits.
