Tonight in DC: Joe Nice + Hatcha at Forward Fest!

If you are a music lover in the DC area you undoubtedly know that ForwardFest is going on this week, one of the city's largest electronic music festivals.  They have done a great job this year of bringing out some names that are really pushing boundaries in current music.  Tonight our own Joe Nice will be behind the decks along with Legendary dubstep trailblazer Hatcha for what is sure to be a bass-heavy night of chest-thumping music.

Also, our good friends from the ForQuarters collective as well as The Elders will be in another part of the city for the Forward Fest House showcase.  All in all it's a great night to be in DC.  We'll see you out tonight!

The Gumball with Tommy Largo – This Saturday!

Baltimore's ForQuarters Collective is once again bringing some top-tier talent to Charm City, this time all the way from the Netherlands!  If you are a lover of deep or jacking house music, chances are you have heard one of Tommy Largo's productions.  With releases on many of the country's top House Music labels, Tommy's songs have been played by the likes of DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and Johnny Fiasco just to name a few.  His productions are proven floor fillers, and now he brings his signature sound to Baltimore for another installment of The Gumball!  As an added bonus, opening support is being provided by our good friends The Elders, further securing this as a can't-miss evening.

What's better than dancing to great music?  Doing it for a great cause!  Organized by our good friend Donny Sizemore (Sizemo) and featuring some great Gourmetbeats talent including The Elders and our own Tyler Schmith, the event hopes to raise awareness for the Campaign for Cancer Prevention which supports several of the world's largest and longest running studies into understanding cancer causes and preventions.  It's free, but we suggest contributing to Donny's goal of $3,000 towards the cause!

WMC 2012 Countdown – Hidden Gem: D’Vine Hookah Lounge

One of the best things about the Winter Music Conference is the huge variety of South Beach venues that will be hosting events.  You can literally go to an amazing, multi-million dollar club with a top of the line sound system on Wednesday, and then go to a small family-owned corner bistro on Thursday, seeing the same level of world-renowned talent and having the same amount of fun at each.  In fact, some of our best experiences at the WMC have been at the most unexpected of places, be it coffee shops, sushi bars, or hotel lobbies.  The great thing about having such a tremendous amount of talent descending simultaneously into one city is that the music can sneak up and get you at almost any moment.  It’s always recommended that you have your dancing shoes on.

One of those unexpected gems that ranked in our top-10 of party destinations last year was D’vine Hookah Lounge.  D’Vine is a small family-owned wine bar and hookah lounge that sits on the busy thoroughfare of Lincoln Road.  It's typically not a place that one would go to hear world-class house music, but some crazy DJs have plopped a giant stack of speakers and a booth right in the middle of the place for the duration of the WMC, and it works.  It's intimate and comfortable, and full of like-minded house lovers all ready to dance, and the lineup is one you might expect at any of Miami's top super-clubs: Roy Davis Jr., Jonn Hawley, Sonny Fodera, Gene Farris, Corduroy Mavericks, Stacy Kidd... the list just goes on and on!  Best of all, the events are completely free and when your legs are tired from dancing you can enjoy a hookah in one of the outdoor couches overlooking Lincoln road.  This is most definitely on our list of places to be this year.

D'Vine is located at 445 Lincoln Rd., and you can see a complete list of events online at http://www.thelistwmc.com/wmcvenues/venue/131.html

WMC 2012 Countdown – Featured Label: Large Music

In the world of independent House Music labels, staying power is rare, and few outfits have had the ability to consistently release standout tracks while staying true to their vision and sound.  Even fewer have had the sheer volume of hit records and breakout artists as Chicago's Large Music.  Operating now for over 15 years under the leadership of founder Jeff Craven, Large Music's roster has become a who's-who of House Music.  They have been behind an unbelievable number of songs that are now considered "classics", while at the same time releasing a constant flow of top-quality music, helping to break a new generation of artists.  It's this combination of veteran legends and fresh energy that makes the Get Large Miami party one that we look forward to every year.

Get Large first hit South Beach in 2002, and has been a major conference event ever since.  Gourmetbeats first attended in 2004, when those in the know could email to get on the guest list and receive a special "Large" pin in the mail.  It's this sense of sincere community, even with Large's success, that makes this event really special and has helped to build Large's devoted worldwide following.

The event itself will be held at SoBe Live, and includes an exciting lineup featuring Deron Delgado, Jonn Hawley, Sonny Fodera, Nathan G, Jask, and a special appearance by Doc Martin.  With Large's tremendous influence, we wouldn't be surprised if you saw some surprise guests behind the decks as well.  For us, the Get Large event has been a gauge of what the new sounds and influences in house music are going to be for the coming year, and we're excited to see what they bring to 2012!

WMC 2012 Countdown – Featured Venue: The Shelborne

The Winter Music Conference is only weeks away and once again Gourmetbeats is here to help you navigate the hundreds of events that will be touching down on Miami's South Beach for this 10 day electronic music extravaganza.  With dance music's influence taking a strong hold in the pop charts in 2011, it's sure to be one of the most well-attended conferences to date, and we'll be posting our picks of the most promising venues, labels and events in the days leading up to it.  You'll be able to see them all compiled under the WMC2012 tag so stay tuned.  We'll also have people tweeting and reporting live from the the streets to help you find those amazing moments that you can never really plan for!

One of the venues that consistently embraces the Winter Music Conference and is making a concerted effort to push some interesting sounds this year also happens to be one of Miami’s most luxurious. The Shelborne Hotel with its classic Art Deco styling, ocean-front location and stunning pool embodies what we think of when WMC season starts to roll around. First opening in 1940, one can imagine the classic movie stars that have walked these halls, and it provides the perfect backdrop for the WMC. We’ve seen some legendary moments at the Shelbourne pool in years past, and they look to only be upping the ante in 2012.

This year the Shelborne has partnered with DJ Mag and PioneerDJ to bring a tremendous lineup to both their outside pool location and to Shine, their indoor nightclub. On the surface it seems to have the same huge names that we would expect at a top-tier venue - Sasha, Sander Kleinenberg, Armand Van Helden – all great artists of course, however dig a little deeper and we see that they have really put some thought into this lineup, including breakout and legendary underground artists such as Solomun, Derrick Carter, Tiefshwarz, Dennis Ferrer, Josh Wink, Timmy Regisford, and Cajmere just to name a few.  Looking at this lineup and that pool, you could probably spend the whole conference right here and be perfectly content.  We will most definetely be spending some time at the Shelborne during the conference, and we expect to come back with plenty of great stories from this classic Miami locale.

The full lineup can be seen on the official WMC list as well as at http://www.shelborneevents.com/ and tickets are available from Wantickets.com.

It’s another Gumball! – Gene Farris on Feb 18th

The dance scene in Baltimore has been more vibrant than ever as of late, and without question one of the major players in the city has been the ForQuarters Collective.  Besides their monthly residency at Red Maple and appearances up and down the East Coast, they are also responsible for the irregularly scheduled party branded as "The Gumball".  Since May of last year, the event has been thrown every few months and features some of the best talents in the industry, and we're always excited when we hear that another one is coming up.

Never ones to disappoint, this next installment features the one and only Gene Farris, a DJ that needs no introduction as his 100+ productions and worldwide touring has cemented him as a dance music legend.  We've been able to catch Gene a few times over the years, and his sets always manage to surprise us with their originality and consistent ability to keep the dance floor packed to capacity.  If you can make it to Baltimore this is definitely not one to miss.
